Interview with Peter Johnson London Business School Masters in Finance

During my recent visit to London, I spent the morning at London Business School. I have several posts worth of thoughts and material This is the first in a series of post stemming from my recent visit to London Business School. During my visit I interviewed Peter Johnson, Senior Admissions Manager, Masters in Finance. Although I am presenting our conversation in interview format. Peters responses are not verbatim quotes. They are based on my notes. Is the experience requirement similar to that of the MBA? Do you require experience for the MiF? Yes, we have a required minimum of two years of full-time work experience in the financial field but we strongly prefer three or more years. Candidates who will only have two years experience at the start of the programme will typically be of a fast-track program with a top financial institution. Our average amount of work experience is six years, with the part-time program being slightly higher. Also the upper end of work experience for our students tends to be higher than the MBA and may overlap the Sloan Fellows program, as the programme can also be a good fit for people in more senior management roles. The absolute experience requirement is finance. The MiF Is not for career changers. It is for finance career advancers and enhancers. What are the typical educational and professional backgrounds of participants in MiF? They have to be bright enough to do well is a quantitatively rigorous program, and they have to be able to show us that brightness. We also want to see a real commitment and passion for finance. We want to see that they will be able to contribute. Do they have the technical skills? Is the CFA viewed as evidence of those technical skills and of that passion? Yes. It is a recognized credential. What about the GRE? We say that the GRE can provide evidence that you will do well or poorly on the GMAT, but we still require the GMAT. Is London Business Schools MiF experiencing stable, increasing, or declining demand as evidenced by application volume? Application volume for the full time program is steady; there has been a very substantial increase for the weekend-format program. We have noted an increase in the percentage of very strong candidates in the applicant pool. What percentage of MiF participants is sponsored at this point in time? Approximately 50% in the part-time program and around 10% of our full-time applicants. It can also vary by geographic region. For example, students from Japan and Korea are almost always sponsored. Do MiF students have access to the career services even if sponsored? Yes. They have access to all career services events and services. Our career services provide an opportunity to network even if someone is returning to a previous employer. They teach valuable resume and interview skills, which a student may use at a future time in his or her career or may use as an employer seeking to hire staff. What does the MiF offer those interested in entrepreneurship. We have some entrepreneurs amongst our alumni, but the program isnt really geared to them. Our entrepreneurs are usually those who a few years after earning their MiF tire of investment banking or whatever theyre doing and then follow the entrepreneurial muse within them. Its a small percentage of our alums, but we do have them, and they say the MiF helped them structure their business and get the funding for it. What is the purpose of the Pre-program and orientation? Are they required? Both are required and the MiF pre-program is in residence. The MiF program includes a thorough introduction to London Business Schools leadership style and completion of our questionnaire on leadership. We also do a comprehensive review of basics that our students may not have studied since college if ever, specifically accounting, statistics for business, and decision tools. Students can waive these classes if they have the background. Does the MiF program allow students to finish in a shorter period of time that the typical ten months for the full-time program or 22 months for the part-time program? We will occasionally allow an enrolled student to finish early, but we dont want them to start with that idea. I realize that London Business School attracts students and professors from around the globe, but is it global in any other ways? We dont have a study trip, but international cases predominate and because both the faculty and the student body come from the four corners of the globe, classroom discussion and club events have a distinctly international flavor. Users don’t have to majorly worry about the quality of the sound as wireless headphones have a decent sound quality. Most though just can’t compare with the highest quality wired headphone. Other downsides to the wireless headphones are: more expensive, the need to stock up on batteries, a delay in the audio, and possible interference from other signals the headphone is running on. Making the Right Choice In choosing between a wired and wireless headphones, it all boils down to purpose of usage and preference. Ask yourself these questions: †¢ What is your main priority? Having headphones that produce the best quality audio or one that can give you more movement? †¢ Where will you mostly use it? At the home and office where you just sit for a long period of time? Or will you be bringing it outdoors, while you do walks or strolls at the park? †¢ What can you not go without – pesky wires or the best sound quality? Answer: Introduction: A vision is a dream or a perception of how ideal things are supposed to be in your organization, given that all the issues that are affecting the organization are fully and correctly addressed. Visions are short phrases that convey the organizations future expectations. A vision clarifies and governing principles for the organization (Strategic Vision Statement, 2008). The vision statement of my resort will be To be the best resort in the region with the best and modern facilities. The vision stated above aims to make my resort the best by ensuring that the guests who visit are treated in a manner that leaves a lasting impression on how quality services a resort is supposed to deliver. This will be made possible by the modernization of the facilities in the resort. The resort employees will also be informed of the resort organization culture, such that they understand that to be the best in the region their services, as well as conduct, must be top notch. Employees culture will further be reinforced by the occasional training seminars they will be obliged to attend twice every year (Rouse and Davis, 2004). Investors who have provided the financial capital to fund the project of this resort, will also not be left out as they are aware that the hospitality industry is very competitive. The Good Earth The Good Earth The Good Earth, by Pearl S. Buck, is a tale of a farmer who rises from a commoner to a wealthy land owner. The setting is pre-Revolutionary China, sometime in the 20th century. The story is one of a farmer who becomes a wealthy man through hard work while facing droughts and floods. He becomes very rich, but forgets his true love, the earth, which got him to where he was. The mood of the story is serious. Droughts and floods affect the outcome of crops, which in turn, affect the people who need them to survive. As the story progresses, the mood changes to become more light hearted and careless. It is typical of today's society of how the main character becomes rich and then forgets what it was like to be on the other side. He spends money carelessly and neglects to remember how his life was just a few months before. The main element of the story is definitely character. We look through the eyes of the main character and see how he, as a person, grows and matures.There are many characters in the story. The first is Wang Lung, a farmer and the main character of the story. The author tells the story through his view of life. We see Wang Lung at the beginning of the story as a young man, full of energy and love for his land. He has been raised on the land he now farms and takes great pride in maintaining it. Later in the story, he becomes a rich man, and forgets his land, "One's flesh and blood." As he finds out that money is not everything and cannot by happiness, he realizes his fault and returns to the earth. O-lan is Wang Lung's wife in the story. She was a slave girl raised in the great House of Hwang. Wang Lung buys her from the house, but he sees that "there is no beauty of any kind in her face." But Wang Lung cannot afford a beautiful wife, for he is only a farmer. O-lan is a strong, but quite character. She bears hardships as they come and gives Wang Lung four children. Wang Lung seems to care for her, but she in return shows very little emotion. She is a hard character to reach and only before she dies, do we see the real side of O-lan. The next main character is Lotus, a prostitute living at the tea shop in town. During the story, Wang Lung becomes ashamed of his plain wife. He ventures into the tea shop in town and pays for a prostitute, Lotus. She excites him and "kept him fevered and thirsty, even if she gave him his will of her." Wang Lung falls in love with this woman and buys her to live in his house. She is a woman of delicacy and elegance, the complete opposite of O-lan, who she comes to dislike. The two live in opposite parts of the house, which keeps them happy. Lotus is another character who is blocked out from the reader. We only know that she is a material person, asking for jewels and expensive clothes and food from Wang Lung. There are many other characters who play fairly large, but not main parts in the story. Wang Lung has four children, three boys and a girl. The two oldest boys become rivals later in the story and offer Wang Lung "no peace" in his old age. The girl, who he affectionately calls "the fool," does not speak, but with her empty smile and sweet gaze fills Wang Lung with intense love and sadness. Wang Lung also lives with his father, who in his old age, sits in the sun most of the day only calling out to be fed. The story begins on Wang Lung's wedding day. He heads to the House of Hwang where he buys his wife, O-lan, from the Old Mistress there. He finds his wife plain, but a good worker and a strong-willed person. She works beside him on his land, harvesting the grain to sell. It is not long before she bears his first child, a son. But after birth, she returns to the fields to finish with the day's work. This shocked me and gave me an idea of how strong a person she really was. Year after year, O-lan and Wang Lung worked the fields, saving the extra money for whenever they needed it. The first people to ever enter the United States were both my Grandmother and Grandfather. They have come along way back in the day, and the day they finally got to start their new life in the United States was a great blessing. As they came to the Philippines, they tried to get as many of my aunts and uncles into their as quick as they can, but unfortunately only just a few were able to. And one of those few was my father. Growing up, I was left there for about two years until my father came to come get me, along with my mother. But from then on after I was four years old and changing to a different environment and different language was a pretty challenging task for myself even though I dont remember much. Identifying myself as well as my family, I would consider myself as an Ilocono and as I grew up I definitely came to know about it more because I would speak my language so fluently although I wasnt able to learn the main language which was Tagalog. My family entered the United States as immigrants back then but later below, I will explain the significance of the race, skin color and hair play within my group. One of the most dominant religions in the Philippines would have to be Catholicism but they do have other religions. My expectations when I was little was becoming a basketball player because growing up, I would always watched basketball but then realized I was too short and didnt have the determination to become an NBA player. In most Asian countries as well as the Philippines is that individuals seem to have an awfully hard time saying no all because they have a tendency to try and avoid hurting another persons feelings. Basically saying no to a person, can be considered by others as not being so friendly or even disrespectful. Filipinos would rather agree and say yes, even though they really mean to say no. Many Filipinos are dialogue oriented but in some cases it somewhat resembles and has a relation to Spanish. As a sign of respect, they usually do simple things that people tend to find a little strange but they usually address people by their title. After awhile from time to time, as well as a relationship being established, they address business associates by their nickname or title. Knowing the Filipino culture, there are also ways that they communicate. For an example they might have made a gesture, which means something. A smile can easily be understood as an agreement or conformation in a discussion that may have recently occurred. This same exact smiling gesture can also be used to hide an embarrassing disagreement, as well as an aggravation. An eyebrow that is raised and a jerking of the head upward is a nonverbal sign of affirmation. A person could also point their head downward is a gesture for saying no. Another example could also be when an individual says yes including the pointing of their head down can be legitimately certain that they have a negative agreement with what you have been recently discussing about. While in most of the cultures, it is similar and mutual for both women and men to shake hands with each other when they are introduced for the first time as well as being able to greet each other. With that being said, Filipinos are the opposite. For the Filipino culture, any kind of touching is a low for most. When men touch women, that is the case. All across the Philippines there are many dialects, but one interesting thing is that the country is split into different regions. These regions are called Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. In the Philippines, the Gender roles are mostly found in dating, marriage, school systems, and especially the many families of Filipinos. One of the major texts that tries to explore the relationship of class and taste is the article by Jane Steinhauer entitled â€Å"When the Joneses wear Jeans.† According to Steinhauer, unlike in earlier times, social class â€Å"has become harder to see in the things that Americans buy† (2005). This is because of the fact that prices have become more flat, and credit spending has become so popular, that even ordinary Americans can now actually buy high end products, that were before only exclusive to upper class Americans (Steinhauer 2005). In this case, it may be seen that the tastes of a certain individual does not necessarily reflect his or her social class, due to the fact that even ordinary citizens of America can now have the option to buy products that are commonly associated with the upper classes. In this case, then, does it negate the fact that class determines taste? However, Steinhauer does not easily agree. This is because of the fact that she still conced es that â€Å"status symbols have not disappeared† and that â€Å"the marketplace have simply gone one better, rolling out ever pricier goods and pitching them to ever loftier rich† (Steinhauer 2005). The patriarchy was pretty evident but durin g the 30’s there were countless movies that showed a headstrong female lead but there role and discourse in the movie were especially when depicting sexuality. Women were not really treated as symbolic for sexuality; largely they played roles of young damsel in distress, however they shed significant amount of light on the strength of a woman’s to confront all her problems. The movies then followed a strict feministic theme and usually along with a female lead there were greedy and lustful antagonist that turned out to be the prime source of conflict in the movie plot. The commercial success of movies such as Dokhtar-e-Lor or the Lor Girl in 1933 showed the hardships and plight of a gypsy woman. Though the movie entailed strong factual errors and numerous directorial flaws but the heroic tale of Golonar, the Lor Girl became an instant success on an international front. The main protagonist was played by an Iranian singer and the movie propagated a progressive image of the Iranian society that the Shah wanted to establish. The plot of the movies largely revolved around the domestic problems of women and since their roles in the society was rather limited. (Lahiji, 2011) However, once the Islamic revolution had taken place the Iranian society became largely misogynistic in their practices. There was hardly any freedom given to the female population and at this point women’s participation in theater and films rapidly declined as it was compulsory for women to wear hijab and they were unable to step out of their houses without their â€Å"mahram’, which is a collective term for a woman’s male relative such as husband, brother or father. One of the main drawbacks that occurred as a result of this practice was prostitution, a problem that was further exacerbated by the Iran-Iraq war. (Donmez-Colin, 2004, p.155-170 & Dabashi, 2001, p. 7) Since most of the male members of the family had gone to war, women had no choice but to suppor t their families by resorting to prostitution. In a country governed according to religious guidelines, though prostitution dealings are done from behind a veil but all these elements are pretty rampant in Iran. Iranian women are the prime victims of domestic and marital violence. Not only on a domestic front but women have to endure great atrocities especially the criminal justice and correctional system for women is often labeled as being ruthless.
